Keeping your Greyhound Cool & Comfortable this Summer

Knowing the British weather, this hot weather isn't going to last. However, in the meantime, it's important to keep your greyhound cool and comfortable. Here are 5 simple tips to keeping your greyhounds cool & comfortable this summer. 1. Let's start with the obvious. Water The more water the better. Always having water on hand, whether you're at home or out and about, is essential to keeping your greyhound properly hydrated during the hotter days.

2. Shade We know some love the sunshine, and some don't, but it's always important to have some shade available for your greyhound. Keeping them out of the sun is a quick and easy way to keep your greyhound comfortable and helps avoid any sort of heatstroke. If your hound is hesitant or being stubborn, try putting their bed, water bowl, and some toys in a shaded area in the garden to encourage them.

3. Walking in the mornings or late afternoons All of our greyhounds need exercise, and judging the right time of day to go for a walkies is key. Early mornings and late afternoons are best when the temperature has lowered and the pavements are cooler. Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hands, then it's too hot for your hound. If you still consider it to be too hot later on in the day, try some light garden games with your greyhound to break up their day and keep them exercised. This can also be a great way to try some training.

4. A wet cloth Take a cloth or bandana and dip it in some cool water. Draping this over your greyhound will cool them considerably. Once the cloth has warmed up though, ensure you remove it and re-wet it as a warm cloth will trap the heat. 5. Get a cooling mat This is not a replacement for your greyhounds' bed (which is likely the sofa anyway), but a cooling matt can be a great way to keep your hound cool in the hotter temperatures.
